Argentina February 2018
Arrived to Buenos Aires on Thursday, February 8th to join Jessica Sinto and Zane Varvel. We booked a large bohemian apartment in the Palermo Hollywood area for $143/night.
Flights in Argentina and Chile are much more expensive for foreigners than they are for nationals. Beware of this when you are researching domestic flights, Google Flights may say that the 1hr20min flight from Baricloche to El Calafate is only $100 but when you click on it you’ll see that is the Argentine Citizen price – the foreigner price may be $200 or more.
Buenos Aires
Ubers are cheap and easy use – we used them exclusively. I got a Movistar SIM card that was free, you needed to show you passport and you can get up to 3 SIM cards per passport. Then you go to a Farmacia (or a kiosk – one of those little corner shops) and show them your phone number and give them 200 pesos ($10) and they will load that to your account. I was on some sort of data plan that charged me 5 pesos per day for 50mb of data and when I wanted to use more than 50mb I was charged an additional 5 pesos ($0.25) per 50 mb. That works out to $5 a GB, not bad. The service was good and worked almost everywhere at 4G/LTE speeds.
San Telmo area is the hipster/cool graffiti/marketplace. Most of the market is food or antiques, not much else as far as things to buy. We really loved the little wine bar in the middle of the market across from the Swiss Raclette Cheese stand. Delicious empanadas nearby too.
Palermo is a great area to walk around, plenty of places to eat and drink. Most of the shopping is higher end fashion stores and some big brands. Favorite restaurants include, Cucina Paradiso – a tiny Italian restaurant with incredible lasagna and ravioli (try the Raviolone – it is one huge ravioli). Siamo nel Formo – fantastic wood fired personal sized pizza. Campobravo – expensive steak house, fancy but worth the cost. Muelle 33 – neighborhood ceviche spot. El Sanjuanino in Recoleta has the best empanadas in town (20 pesos each take away). Meike in Palermo has a fantastic Carne Empanada (40 pesos) and is a nice place for lunch. M (yes the restaurant is call just M) is a great place for ceviche – expensive but worth it. There is a speakeasy called Frank’s that most people will rave about, you need a password to get in on the weekends – they put the password on their FB page for everyone to see – it’s a gimmicky place with lazy décor and terrible service. I don’t recommend it.
Parque Los Andes is a nice area to go for a walk and see the Portenos (local Buenos Aires residents) exercising and enjoying their afternoon.
